Seizure-related gene 6 (SEZ6), Sez6-like and Sez6-like 2 comprise a family of neuronal proteins shown to influence dendritic morphology and the number of synapses. Their extracellular domains consists of a series of CUB and sushi-type domains which suggest cell adhesion and receptor trafficking roles. The entire extracellular domain can be subject to membrane shedding by BACE-1 similar to what has been observed for the amyloid precursor proteins. They have been implicated in neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders such as autism, schizophrenia, intellectual disability, bipolar disorder and epilepsy. 1 2 3
